How to Transport Lengths of PVC & Other Long Construction Material

What is the safest and easiest way to transport lengths of construction material that don’t confine to smaller vehicles like pickups and cargo vans?

How often have you seen vehicles travelling down the street with construction materials either hanging out the back end of a pick up truck  or cargo van with very little to keep them in place other than a few bungee cords and some red tape to make you aware there is five feet of wood or PVC pipe coming your way.

The Welding Shop Calgary has a solution to the problem if you are a contractor who is constantly battling this issue.

This overhead rack made with lengths of 1/16 X3/4 square aluminum tubing, closed at either end to keep materials from escaping in transport, makes it easy to move lengths of construction material such as deck boards, copper pipe or PVC tubing.

What is a Plasma Table?

A plasma table uses a process that creates an electrical channel of super-heated ionized gas that travels through the metal being cut to a grounded work table.
An electrical arc is then formed within the gas, between an electrode near or integrated into the gas nozzle and the workpiece itself. The electrical arc ionizes some of the gas, thereby creating an electrically conductive channel of plasma. As electricity from the cutter torch travels down this plasma it delivers sufficient heat to melt through the workpiece. At the same time, much of the high-velocity plasma and compressed gas blow the hot molten metal away, thereby separating, i.e. cutting through, the workpiece.

In this case the plasma table is hard at work making the components for some out door lamp posts.

If you have a project that needs the precision of a plasma table give us a call at The Welding Shop Calgary for info or for a FREE Quote. 403-273-7717

Big Welds Don’t Always Mean Big Structure

Excavator Bucket Repair

The life expectancy of an average excavator is between 7,000 and 10,000 hours. The life expectancy of the digging bucket on that excavator is considerably less and depending on the terrain can change dramatically with broken teeth and bending.

A new digging bucket for just about any excavator can cost between $500 & $1400 dollars.

The Welding Shop Calgary has a long history with this type of a repair at a quarter of the cost of a new bucket.

This big bucket just needed a good strong weld to repair a broken tooth.

Give us a call to see how we can save you the cost of a new bucket and get you back to work in record time.

Heavy Duty Bumper

Heavyduty bumpers are mostly built for protection of front ends of pickups and SUVs but is also commonly found on heavy tow trucks used for pushing vehicles out of the way in traffic incidents where roads need to be cleared or for helping vehicles that have become stuck in mud or snow.

A bullbar or push bumper (also known as a ‘moose bumper’ in Canada,) is a device installed on the front of a vehicle to protect its front from collisions in rural areas from large animals like deer and moose or free range cattle.

Extension for Fifth Wheel

It’s not every day that we extend the deck on a big rig and rebuild the fifth wheel.

The fifth-wheel coupling provides the link between a semi-trailer and the towing truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly. The coupling consists of a kingpin, a 2-or-3+1⁄2-inch-diameter (50.8 or 88.9 mm) vertical steel pin protruding from the bottom of the front of the semi-trailer, and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle.

This modification was done to accommodate greater space between the cab and the trailer giving the rig more room for storage.

Just a Little Off The Back

Over the years The Welding Shop Calgary has had many request to modify everything from RV’s to Big Rig cabs but this one is a first.

The particular client wanted some length removed from his flat deck.

The easy part was removing the 5ft of length from the back of the deck. The hard part was re-framing the remaining portion and then welding a special fit rear impact guard.

The impact guard is required by law and is designed to keep vehicles from going under the flat deck if there happens to be a rear impact.
